Who can attend
• Participation is free, ex Brisbane.
• Younger veterans, ie post Vietnam, are the target group from any of the services.
• Each trek will cater for up to 12 serving and ex-service volunteers identified as individuals who will benefit from the experience.
• The QLD trek will be based at Millmerran.
• The course will utilize the remote environment combined with team and individual analysis assisted by skilled leaders. Some nights will be spent in the bush in relatively rough conditions.
• The program will be delivered by veterans who have faced and overcome the issues which confront younger veterans.  Civilian expertise will also be utilized.

Design
Trojan’s Trek will provide the setting and conditions under which participants will experience a lasting positive shift in personal values and interpersonal relationships designed to improve their lifestyle and community involvement.

Objectives
The objectives of the trek are to develop in the participants through joint and individual challenge:
• an understanding of how thoughts and feelings influence behaviour,
• exposure to various strategies which will bring about positive change,
• suggested individual responses which are effective in achieving the aim, and
• enhance self esteem.

How is Trojan’s Trek different from standard therapies and counseling?
Trojan’s trek is a circuit breaker program. Individuals will require follow-up treatment on completion. The differences between this program and conventional treatment may be summarized as follows:
The program;
• is culture specific,
• encourages group identity and experience sharing,
•involves veteran to veteran delivery,
• utilizes the remoteness and peace of the bush
• focuses is on individuals transference from “victim to warrior”, and
• includes providing partners with some understanding the illness.

Outcomes
To date the impact of the trek on participants and families has been excellent. The program has been independently evaluated by the Australian Centre for Post Traumatic Mental Health. The RAR Association is keen to continue the program and convincing those who make decisions in this area, that this approach to military stress is a valuable adjunct to other methods of treatment. The association believes that the philosophy is sound and may have wider application within the military and other organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions
I know you will have many questions prior to your commitment. The following FAQ may assist you.

• Q. Do I get paid during the project? A. No, leave from your employer is probably the answer.

• Q. Can interstaters get assistance with airfares? A. Yes some assistance is available to offset this cost.

• Q. Do I have to pay to attend? A. No, we provide transport from Brisbane to the trek location and return; and feed you for the six days away.

• Q. Am I covered for compensation?  A. Yes, the Foundation has a Public Liability Policy which covers the activity.

.Q.  Am I required to walk very far? A. No, the trek is a journey which is cerebral not physical.  Almost all movement between locations is done by vehicle.

• Q. Will I receive mileage payments for attending briefings etc. A. No, unfortunately we cannot pay this element.

• Q. What if there is a family emergency, can I get home? A. Yes

• Q. Do I have to take special gear? A. If you have a swag, belt and water bottles, compass and a day pack, that will be helpful.  Otherwise we will supply.

• Q. What else do I take?  A. All this detail will be provided, however no expensive equipment is required.

• Q. Is a shop handy if I forget something?  A. No, what we or you carry is all we have. Note: the trek is alcohol and drug free apart from prescription drugs.

• Q. Can I be contacted during the trek?  A. Yes a message may be left at the Shearers’ Quarters at Millmerran QLD.

• Q. Are medical facilities available? A. Yes, a para medic will be on hand for the SA trek and some staff members are qualified senior first aiders.
